What Should I Do
If I Am in a Car Accident?

It is important to remain at the scene and exchange information with other people involved in the accident. Your statements and actions at the scene of an accident are important. Consider the following pointers.

9 Things You Should Do after an Auto Accident?

  1. If you are able and it is safe to do so, move your vehicle to a safe place, such as the side of the road or a nearby parking lot.

  2. You will likely be experiencing an "adrenaline rush", which can impact how you perceive pain or circumstances. Take a careful inventory of your body to determine whether you are injured. If you are feeling dazed, you should request medical attention immediately. When in doubt, get checked out!

  3. Do not admit fault. It is almost impossible to know all of the specifics of an accident immediately after it occurs. Often, an investigation is necessary to determine which parties are wholly or partially at fault. Admitting fault at the scene can affect your circumstances.

  4. Call the police to report the accident, preferably while still at the scene.

  5. Exchange information with the other people involved. Obtain their full name (from their driver's license), phone number, address, license plate number, and their insurance information.

  6. If you are able and it is safe to do so, take photos or videos of the vehicles and the scene of the accident from a variety of angles. Also be sure to document your injuries with photos throughout the treatment and healing process.

  7. If you do not leave the scene of the accident, you should go to the hospital immediately, even if you are not sure you are hurt. Tell the medical professionals that you were in an accident. Sometimes, with the shock of a sudden accident, you can be injured and not recognize it. For example, certain types of injuries such as internal bleeding or head injuries are not apparent to those that have suffered them.

  8. Notify your insurance company of the accident. Utah law requires that all insurance policies provide at least $3,000 for "personal injury protection", or PIP. This can offset the cost of your treatment regardless of fault.

  9. Call an attorney. Experienced personal injury attorneys at Bangerter Frazier Group can help you navigate the process of making claims with the appropriate insurance companies to get compensated for your property damage, rental car, loss of use, and most importantly, medical treatment, pain, suffering, and lost wages.

What If the Other Driver Has No Insurance, or Only a Small Amount of Insurance?

Even if the other driver has no insurance or a minimum limits insurance policy, we can help you determine other sources of recovery, including Underinsured or Uninsured Motorists claims. Also, it is sometimes possible to collect assets from an at-fault driver who does not have enough coverage to adequately compensate you.
